What types of writing do you edit?

I work across both academic and creative writing. My specialty is dissertations and theses, but I also edit fiction, nonfiction, creative writing, poetry, and college assignments. You can see the full list on my services page.

Beyond editing, I offer beta reading in all genres, proofreading, copy editing, and developmental editing. I also work on essays, personal statements, college admissions essays, résumés and cover letters, business writing, grant and scholarship writing, research, fact-checking, and curriculum writing. If you aren't sure which service fits, just describe your project and I'll point you in the right direction.

How quickly will I hear back?

I respond to every quote request within 24 hours by email. Your quote is personalized to your project, and it's always free with no obligation to move forward.

What file formats do you accept?

I prefer a .docx file or a Google Doc. Both handle track changes and in-line comments beautifully. I work on a Mac, but this never affects your files or formatting.

You can attach your document right in the contact form, or share a Google Docs link in your project details.

Do you use AI to edit my work?

Never. My editing is purely human, from the first read to the final comment. This is a promise I take seriously, because your voice deserves a real reader, not an algorithm.

If you have used AI in your own writing, I simply ask that you let me know and share the prompts you used, so I can give you the most accurate feedback.

How does payment work?

Payment is split: 50% upfront to reserve your spot in my schedule, and 50% after your first edit is complete. This means you never pay ahead for work that hasn't been delivered.

The deposit is non-refundable once I begin, and completed rounds are non-refundable, since the time and work have already been invested. If you need to cancel before I start, just let me know.

Invoices are sent by email, and payment is accepted only through the secure Stripe link I provide once your quote is confirmed. I never accept payment through any other platform or method, so please treat any outside payment request as fraudulent.

How many revisions are included?

Every package includes two additional revision rounds at no extra cost, along with a detailed letter explaining the key changes and track changes with in-line comments throughout.

Which citation styles do you know?

I have written and edited extensively in MLA, APA, and Chicago. For academic work, just let me know your required style and I'll make sure your citations and references are consistent and correct.

Can you edit my dissertation if my defense is in two weeks?

Honestly, no. I don't take on rush dissertation line edits when a committee deadline is only weeks away. My process is thorough and time-intensive, and rushing it wouldn't serve your work or my wellbeing.

If you're planning ahead, I'd love to help. Reach out as early as you can so we can schedule enough time to do it right.

What is beta reading, and how is it different from editing?

Beta reading is big-picture feedback from a reader's perspective, rather than line-level correction. I read all genres and give you a detailed letter covering things like plot, pacing, character believability, emotional engagement, and tone.

You can provide your own feedback template or let me use mine. It's ideal when you want to know how your story lands before you polish the prose.

Will you rewrite my work for me?

No, and that's intentional. My job is to strengthen your clarity and confidence, not to replace your voice with mine. I may offer example sentences to illustrate a suggestion, but I won't write your project for you. You keep full autonomy over every decision.

Do you handle formatting and page layout?

I handle citations, references, tables of contents, and lists of figures. I do not do overall page layout or image placement. For full document design, I recommend your institution's formatting guide or a design specialist.

How much will my project cost?

Every quote is built per project, based on your page count, the type of editing you need, and your deadline. You can try the estimator on my pricing page for a ballpark idea, but the only way to get a real number is to request a free quote.

If we have AI, why do I need to hire a human editor?

Because AI can only tell you whether your writing resembles other writing. It cannot tell you whether your dissertation's argument actually holds, whether your protagonist's choice feels earned, or whether your personal statement sounds like you. AI smooths text toward the average, and the entire value of your work is that it is not average.

There are practical stakes, too. AI tools invent citations, miss context, and flatten voice, and institutions and publishers increasingly screen for undisclosed AI involvement. A human editor gives you judgment, accountability, and confidentiality: I can explain every change, I answer for my work, and your manuscript never touches an AI system. Use AI as a brainstorming tool if it helps you, but when the stakes are real, you want a reader who actually understands what you are trying to say. You can read more in my full answer to this question.

Do you work with writers who speak English as a second language?

Yes, and I love this work. I have worked with students of all ages who have English as a second language, and I spent a year working internationally, where I helped develop a special education program at an international school. I know how to strengthen clarity and grammar while respecting your voice, your meaning, and your effort. Multilingual writers are always welcome here.

Will you steal my idea?

No, and I want to answer this directly because writers genuinely worry about it. Your confidentiality covers more than the document; it covers the concept. Your story premise, your research idea, your business plan, all of it stays yours. I never share your work or your ideas, I never use them in my own writing, and I never feed them to any AI system. I'm happy to sign an NDA on request, though treating your work as confidential is already my standard practice.

Will you judge me for how rough my draft is?

I have never seen a perfect first draft, and if I did, I'd be out of a job. Rough drafts are not embarrassing; they're the raw material of every good piece of writing ever finished. I've spent fourteen years reading work at every stage, and what I notice isn't the mess. It's the potential. Send it as it is.

What if I can't afford a full edit right now?

You have real options. For larger projects, I offer payment in installments; just ask and we'll arrange a fair schedule. If you want to start small, the First Chapter Diagnostic gives you a detailed edit of your opening chapter plus a written summary of patterns across your writing, priced accessibly. And while you save up, my free resources and downloadable checklists are yours to use. Start where you are.

Will you change my voice into yours?

Never, and this is the core of my editing philosophy. My job is to make your writing sound more like you, not like me. Every change appears in track changes, so you see and control every decision. When clients read their edited work, the reaction I aim for is "that's exactly what I meant," not "who wrote this?" Your voice is the point.

Do you actually enjoy my genre, or are you just tolerating it?

Fair question. I read voraciously and widely, from literary fiction to romance to horror to academic prose, and I beta read in every genre on purpose. As a NetGalley Top Reviewer and a former NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison, I've spent years around writers of every stripe. If your genre were a chore to me, I wouldn't offer to read it. Curiosity is a job requirement, and I genuinely have it.

Which English variants can you edit in?

I can edit in US, UK, and Australian English, and I'll keep your spelling, punctuation, and conventions consistent with whichever variant you need. I'm also mindful of inclusive language and regional and cultural context, and I'll flag anything that might not land the way you intend for your audience. Just tell me your target variant when you reach out.
